Could You Benefit From Braces

January 1st, 2019

New Year, New Smile

Ever wonder if you're a good candidate for orthodontic treatment? With so many reasons to get treatment, in addition to aesthetics, it's worth a quick, professional orthodontic opinion to get your best smile!

“Each time you smile you throw a little feel-good party in your brain.” Meg Selig

Seeing a licensed orthodontist is critical due to their specialized education and experience. Some general dentists handle mild orthodontic care but are limited in their scope by complexity and often hand off cases to orthodontics in the end.

Dr. Nathan Davis feels that consultations are so important to making such an important decision, that he offers comprehensive consultations at no cost. This includes full panoramic digital images and a personal meeting with our treatment coordinator and Dr. Davis. The cost savings to you is at least $200 because typical panoramic images cost between $200 and $700. (Our panoramic image is an x-ray taken by a machine that rotates around your head to provide a picture of teeth, jaws and other important information.)

How Long Does a Consultation Take?

Consultations take approximately one hour. After that hour you'll walk out of our office with an individualized treatment plan and projected fee schedule. It's also a great way to get a feel for the office and staff to determine personal fit.

Call 480-969-8500 today to schedule your complimentary orthodontic consultation with Dr. Nathan T. Davis in either our Mesa/Gilbert office or Chandler. We look forward to seeing you and helping you achieve the smile you were meant to have!

Orthodontic Emergencies

December 18th, 2018

Although major orthodontic emergencies are relatively rare, when they do happen it is important to seek immediate attention. By comparison, a minor orthodontic issue is something you can usually take care of yourself, or wait until your next scheduled appointment for care. Here are some guidelines to help you understand the difference between an orthodontic emergency and a minor issue.

Orthodontic Emergencies

Acute, Direct Injury to the Mouth, Jaw, or Teeth

Whether undergoing orthodontic care or not, if you injure your mouth, jaw, or teeth, you should see a doctor or dentist immediately. You may need an X-ray to determine the extent of your injury. If the injury affects the orthodontic appliances, they will need adjustment or possibly replacement, depending upon the extent of the injury.

Infected Teeth

It is possible for teeth to become infected following orthodontic treatment. This may or may not be related to your orthodontic appliances. If you experience pain or swelling around a tooth that gets progressively worse, seek professional care as soon as possible.

Minor Orthodontic Issues

While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, minor issues are much more common. Here are some examples of minor orthodontic issues that can be remedied on your own and/or fixed at your next office visit:

  • Poking wire
  • Loose bracket
  • Loose elastic band
  • Loose wire
  • Loose appliance
  • Headgear does not fit
  • Lost or broken elastic band
  • General soreness

Any of the above issues can happen as a result of normal usage, shifting, and wear of your braces. Eating unusually hard or sticky foods can cause or exacerbate these problems. Vigorous brushing of the teeth can also be a factor. None of these issues are emergencies unless they are accompanied by acute or prolonged pain or discomfort.

As for on-the-spot remedies, covering a loose bracket or wire with wax can be a quick fix to alleviate discomfort until your next orthodontist visit. Poking or protruding wires can be moved with a cotton swab or tweezers, or clipped down with nail clippers. Be sure to sterilize the tweezers or clippers in alcohol first. Cover any clipped wire ends with a small ball of wax.

Some soreness or small abrasions in the mouth are normal, especially with recent orthodontic work. Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution comprised of eight ounces or warm water and one teaspoon of salt.

When in doubt, be sure to contact our Mesa or Chandler office with any questions, or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Nathan Davis at Nathan Davis Orthodontics.

Should I Cancel My Appointment?

November 27th, 2018

Better to be Safe than Sorry

So you've washed, washed, washed those hands... with soap... and you're still sick. It happens. We understand that making and keeping your orthodontic appointments must happen like clockwork in order to stay on track, so re-scheduling isn't always the best. However, there are exceptions to the rule.

When is it OK to Cancel My Appointment?

When you have a fever is the best, short answer. It's also appropriate to use guidelines set by your school or place of employment. Decreasing the spread of germs is always a priority at Nathan Davis Orthodontics, for the sake of our patients as well as our staff. It does become an even higher priority, however, during cold and flu season.

You can do your part by staying as healthy as possible - eat well, drink lots of water (half your body weight in ounces daily) and stay home when necessary. Our team will do our best to get you back on schedule as soon as possible.

And we'll do our part to keep you healthy and smiling through the ups and downs of the cold and flu season because you deserve the smile you were meant to have!

Beyond Brushing To Avoid Plaque

September 18th, 2018

Go beyond simple brushing with PLAQUE HD

Plaque is sneaky and can build up without adequate oral hygiene, especially with the added difficulty of brushing with braces. So in addition to the common tips associated with good oral hygiene such as brushing twice a day, swishing after all meals and acidic/sweet drinks and flossing daily, plaque can still persist.

Finding the plaque in order to brush it away, however, is now easier than ever. Dr. Nathan Davis recommends using PLAQUE HD which is a professional plaque-identifying toothpaste. Using PLAQUE HD aids in discovering trouble spots so they can be taken care of before cavities and gum disease take hold.

When using Plaque HD, normal brushing techniques are used but instead of rinsing right after brushing, it's time to check for green areas which indicate plaque build up. Extra brushing in those areas will help to eliminate the extra plaque, making for fresher breath and cleaner mouth.

Ask Dr. Nathan Davis or any of the staff at your next appointment if PLAQUE HD is right for you. Give us a call if you have any questions or concerns at 480-969-8500. Your smile is depending on your good care!

Do Braces Cause White Spots

August 9th, 2018

Are you worried about getting white spots on your teeth while wearing braces?

Here's the scoop. Not every patient who has braces will get white spots - in fact it is quite rare. With proper hygiene white spots are unlikely and avoidable.

So What Causes White Spots?

When teeth aren't properly taken care of, bacteria form causing byproducts that wear away the teeth depleting necessary minerals. This demineralization leaves the affected area hollow and lighter in color - hence the "white spot" or discoloration. This can also cause the tooth to become rough and pitted.

How Can I Avoid Getting White Spots?

Reduce your chances of developing tooth discoloration while wearing braces by following these hygiene tips:

Brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day to remove bacteria and plaque buildup that contribute to white spots.

Floss daily to remove bacteria between the teeth.

Use a fluoride mouthwash to maintain healthy mineralization.

Avoid foods high in sugar that cause bacteria growth and decrease eating and drinking acidic items. If you do eat or drink items from these categories, brush your teeth and rinse your mouth out as soon as possible.

Because your smile is as important to us as it is to you, please let us know if you have questions or concerns relative to this article or anything pertaining to the smile you were meant to have! Dr. Davis is truly an artist and enjoys creating trusting patient relationships with happy smiling results! Call us for a complimentary consultation with full x-rays at 480-969-8500.

We Love Our Familes

July 23rd, 2018

Congratulations to Our Patient Family - The Coppees

Our fascination with the Coppees began on July 2, 2018 in earnest when Bert brought his daughter Sylvie in for a regular orthodontic appointment. Our Mesa/Gilbert office was celebrating the 4th of July and Bert commented on our decorations - "I love America and I just passed the citizenship test!" His smile was so big and his voice so full of emotion that we just had to know the back story.
So Bert first came to America in January of 1996 from France. He then returned in 1999 for three weeks and then in 2000 to stay. He recalls wanting to live in America since he was a small child.  Realistically he knew it could be a challenge though, so his sites were set on Australia if America didn't work out.
Through sheer perseverance and optimism,  Bert was officially sworn in as a citizen of the United States of America on Friday the 13th (not an unlucky day after all) at 12:30 pm in downtown Phoenix. As shown below, Bert and his family have no problem showing their love and passion for the red, white and blue!
When asked what Bert's favorite U.S. tradition is he commented,
"Honestly, the 4th of July because I feel it was my independence from my own country and of course my love and appreciation for this country, Now I have it all. I like as well Thanksgiving."
When asked if he misses France, he said, "Yes and no, I miss of course my family the most. I haven't' seen my family, especially my sister, her husband and kids for almost 20 years. There are no days I don't think of them. I miss the baguette, the cheese, the pastry...well all the food that I can't find here. Then I love the French music, I am a drummer but we can find a lot of French music on the internet as well as French movie. There are so many I would love to see....they are very funny, well to me. :-)."
Congratulations Bertrand Coppee! We're glad to be a tiny part of your wonderful story and look forward to seeing you and Sylvie soon!

Do I Still Need Braces If My Front Teeth Are Straight?

March 22nd, 2018

Looks Can Be Deceiving

The true goal of orthodontic treatment is to create a healthy bite - which may or may not be happening EVEN if your front teeth appear to be perfectly straight.

Upper and lower teeth are meant to fit in a certain way allowing for biting and chewing food efficiently and comfortably.  If the fit is off, the bite is also, making it impossible for your teeth to perform at their best.

Some Bite Problems With Straight Teeth

Underbite - top teeth are positioned behind bottom teeth (also anterior crossbite)

Open Bite - back teeth are closed, but the front teeth don't meet - or - front teeth meet but the back teeth don't touch

Deep Bite - top teeth completely cover the bottom teeth

Crossbite - bottom teeth are outside of the top teeth

Check Your Bite At No Cost

Dr. Nathan T. Davis can check your bite with a complimentary in-office appointment. Don't subject the future of your smile to premature wear or chipping of teeth, which is unavoidable with a misaligned bite. Call 480-969-8500 to schedule your visit in Mesa/Gilbert or Chandler. Dr. Davis can't wait to give you the smile you were meant to have!
